Maastricht

Maastricht, in a long thin extension to the south east of Holland, is one of the country's more interesting spots beerwise. There are more specialist beer cafes than the far larger cities of Den Haag and Rotterdam can manage. The only downside are the prices which are up there with those of central Amsterdam.

Two disused breweries are a poignant reminder of Maastricht's recent history as a brewing centre. De Ridder was closed by Heineken in 2003, in a move that had more to do with pleasing the stock market than any practical purpose. The witbier which latterly dominated its output - Wieckse Witte - was named after the the Wyck district in which the brewery stands. The beer is now breweed in one of Heineken's monster lager factories.

Just a couple of hundred metres away, also in Wyck, is the De Keyzer brewery. It closed in 1970 but all its equipment is still in place. Tours are available by appointment: 06-45078008. A couple of beers are contract-brewed, Double Saison (Holland's only Saison with a long tradition), Empereurke for Grand Hotel L'Empereur and Abdijbier Rolduc for the Rolduc congress centre in Kerkrade.

Cafe Cloche maastricht interiorOne side of Vrijthof, like the main square in many Dutch towns, is wall-to-wall pubs. Cloche is about in the middle of them.

The dark brown theme is accentuated by dim lighting, but if you look closely there's some fine woodwork. The carved bar counter and back give it a passing resenblence to an English pub. the celing has an interesting collection of disco balls - another first in the pubs I've visited.

Sadly, the beer range has been pared down to little beetter thaan average. Though you don't often see draught Oud Bruin, one of Holland's few genuinely indigenous beer styles.

The staff are friendly and attentive and they do offer kids meals for just €3

L' Empereur, an imposing building bang opposite Maastricht station, is surely worth the designation Grand Hotel. But why have it in a pub guide? Simple - it has its own beer, Empereurke, brewed for it by De Keyzer. That aside, it has a fairly limited beer choice, with perennial favourites Duvel and Westmalle the most drinkable.

Falstaff Maastrichr interiro A hundred metres from Maastricht's main square is the far more intimate Amorsplein. I wont call it a square, as it's triangular in shape. Here you'll find Falstaff, one of the city's specialist beer outlets

Long and narrow pub, the decoration is on the bland side of modern, livened up by a clutch of enamel beer signs.on a small square in the centre of Maastricht.

The beer list is mostly Belgian and includes all the Trappist except Wetvleteren.

As you'll see in the photo, there is a limited amount of outdoor seating.. Just as well the square, sorry triangle, is pedestrianised.

Not the most exciting beer pub I've been in, but worth dropping by for an odd beer.

The walk from Maastricht station to the city centre isn't that long, but it's still nice to have somewhere to take refreshment on the way. Poshoorn fits the bill perfectly.

By Dutch standards, it's relatively spacious inside. The single L-shaped room has one arm more aimed at diners while the other caters for drinkers, too. Light brown in charaacter, there's an unobtrusive posthorn theme going on discretely above the bar (you can just spot it in the top corner of the photo to the left).

I like the emphasis on local food and local beers, which goes so far as to have the menu written in the local Limburg dialect.

The beer list includes De Wykeneer (named after Wyck) which is contract brewed by Kerkom in St. Truiden in Belgium. There's also Double Saison and Abdijbier Rolduc, two of De Keyzer's contract-brewed beers. The remainder is mostly the usual Belgian abbey and Trappist suspects.

A "snack" portion of calimari - a full decent-sized plate - is great value at just €4.05 and very tasty indeed.

A pub defintely worth trying and not just for those incapable of walking more than 200 metres without a rest.

Pothuiske Maastricht interiorPothuiske is a cute little house on the west bank of the Maas.

It's a simple, light-brown cafe with some impressive old photos of Maastricht. There's also a fairly restrained beer theme that limits itself to a single wall (see left).

It has a decent, if not massive, beer list, mostly either Dutch or Belgian.

Outside there's a small terrace facing the Maas, which is no doubt very pleasant in summer.

Sometimes it only takes a few minutes to fall in love with a pub. In Take One it was the chessboards that clinched my affection. Not just the presence of the boards, more the fact that they were in use.

Located in the Wyck districht of Maastricht, it's about exactly half way between the two disused breweries. Quite appropriate for a beer pub.The exterrior, which resembles a shop more than a pub, doesn't do this friendly and cosy pub justice. As you can see from the photo, it's not the largest place in the world, though it comes nowhere near challenging Amsterdam's more bijoux cafes.

The long beer list impresses for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Dutch beer are well represented, something despressingly uncomoon in Holland's Belgian-dominated beer cafes. Secondly they have real Oude Lambiek beers from Hanssens and Boon.

In the guise of Brouwerij De Sier Den, they have beers contract brewed at the Kerkom brewery in Sint Truiden, Belgium.

One of Holland's top beer pubs and a somewhere no visitor to Maastricht should miss.

In den Ouden Vogelstruys Maastricht interiorVogelstruys is an ancient Brand house on the main square that specialises in beers from Limburg.

Consisting of a single square room it has the unchanged-for-centuries feel common in historic Dutch pubs. Dark wood abounds, as you would expect in a brown cafe. There's a spectacular carved bar back and a splendid barcounter, all the better for being uncluttered by beer taps.

A row of portaits of, former customers stretching the length of one wall, gives the impression that no-one under 60 ever frequents the place. However, judging by the broad mix of ages there on my visit, a more likely explanation is that it's an honour only bestowed after decades as a regular.

The beer selection is fairly limited and the lack of list or chalkboard makes finnding exactly what is on offer rather difficult.

De Roeëje Lieuw beer menuThe "Red Lion" is a specialist beer pub, on a pedestrianised street just off the main square in Venlo town centre.

In a notable and praiseworthy exception to most beer cafes in Holland, it doesn´t concentrate on Belgian beers, nor Dutch ones. It´s even more specific than that, specialising in products from Limburg (whose flag bears a red lion, hence the pub´s name). They try to have at least one beer from every brewery in Limburg (both the Belgian and the Dutch province). Dutch Limburg just happens to be Holland´s most heavily-breweried region.

Here´s a report from Philip Booton:
"The cafe is just off the main square in Venlo, at 4 Steenstraat. It is a fairly typical Dutch cafe, long and narrow, with the bar on the left-hand side. Lots of breweriana and maps of Limburg in evidence. There were 7 beers on draught (although there are normally 8), including Christoffel Blond and Hertog Jan Meibock. More than 30 in bottle, listed on a blackboard to the left as you enter. Beers from Kerkom, Achel, Martens, St Jozef from Belgium, plus others from Dutch Limburg. I'm not sure if every brewer in Limburg was represented - are Heeren van Beeck still going, as nothing from them? (* see note below) Prices very reasonable. No food, just a cafe for beer and conversation. The owner, Louis, brews his own beer and has longer term plans to open a brewpub. He allowed me to sample his Tripel, which was excellent."
* Note: The landlord, Louis Klaassens, kindly sent me this update:
"I do sell beers from the Heeren van Beeck. But the brewery doesn’t exist anymore. They sold the equipment to a brewery in the province Zeeland. The beers are brewed at the Lochristi proef-brewery in Belgium near Ghent. I also do sell some food. Cheese (5), crisps (2), sausages (3) and meals cooked with beer on request."
The brewery should be opening in September 2008.
