Dresden Pub Guide
Bars - Brewpubs - Beer gardens

Introduction
The city
Dresden, capital of Saxony, is famous for its barock riverfront. Most public buildings have been carefully rebuilt following the horrific bombing of the city in 1945, but the centre still bears the scars of this senseless destruction. (If you ask me, that Bomber Harris should have been in the dock at Nuremberg, too.)

For the beer drinker, the situation has improved dramatically since reunification. On my first visit in 1984 I could only find one place to drink in the Altstadt. I had to take a tram to the suburbs to find a normal pub. Now, the city is bursting with refreshment opportunities. Though, to be honest, the city centre still isn't as well-endowed as you might expect.
Dresden breweries
In the 1980's, the aurthorities decided to rationalise the 3 breweries in Dresden (Waldschlösschen, Feldschlösschen and Felsenkeller). In their place a single, new plant in Dresden-Coschütz was constructed. This operated as the Coschützer Brauerei until 1992, when it was purchased by Holsten and renamed Feldschlösschen. It still operates under that name today, though it still produces beer under the Coschütz and Felsenkeller labels.

The former Waldschlösschen premises now house a brewpub, while the old Feldschlösschen brewery functions as a brewery tap. A further brewpub (Watzke) and a microbrewery (Neustädter Hausbrauerei) give Dresden a grand total of four breweries - more than it has had for several decades.
