Introduction
I've spent years taking detailed notes on every trip I've ever made. Except in Vienna. Which explains why this guide is less expansive than my usual efforts.

The emphasis is on brewpubs, of which Vienna has more than its fair share. Add the city's two large industrial breweries and you get a total of 13. Not a bad score at all, for a city of Vienna's size (around 1.5 million inhabitants).

Pubs
Austrian pubs - and those of Vienna are no exception - have lots in common with those over the border in the Czech Republic. Hhalf litre measures, reasonably-priced food and vaulted ceilings are the features that most readily spring into my mind.

Beer
There's a pretty good variety of beer on sale in Vienna. Mostly Austrian, with the odd Czech lager or Bavarian wheat beer. Naturally, there are the standard dismal fake Irish pubs with Guinness and Kilkenny, but you'll have to find those yourselves. I've only listed interesting places.

How this page is organised
Vienna being a rather large and sprawling city, I've split this guide into eight sections, arranged by "Bezirk".

Want to know even more?
Read Gazza Prescott's account (after you've studied this guide carefully, of course) of a beer hunt around Vienna's brewpubs. If I'm being honest, you should start there. He's visited the city more recently than me. And he has first-hand knowledge or more of the pubs. I don't know why I bothered, really.

There's also the Wiener Lokale website, which lists loads of Vienna pubs. It's in German, but, being in table format, getting the information you need shouldn't be a problem. Just remember "Fassbiere" means "draught beers" and "Flaschenbiere" means "bottled beers".

Europe for visitors has a page deicated to Vienna restaurants.
