Introduction
Oslo and its Pubs
Oslo city centre has more pubs than you might have feared. Though the prices are the stuff of nightmares.

Imitation British or Irish pubs are the most popular type of alcohol outlet, though there is a new generation of trendy bars.

Sadly, one of the city's two brewpubs, Studenten, has stopped brewing. Particularly annoying, as it was right in the centre of town. The remaining brewpub, excellent though may be, is an irritating tram ride away.

Beer to go
Standard strength beer (up to a maximum of 4.75% ABV) is sold in supermarkets. Anyone wanting to sample the dwindling number of stronger beers (down to 22, half of them christmas specials), will need to learn to negotiate the Vinmonopol system of state alcohol shops. At least the ludicrous and illogical maximum strength for beer of 7% has been abolished.

I suggest looking in the Yellow Pages; they're so well hidden you're unlikely to stumble upon one by chance. There are only 135 of them in the whole of Norway. Oslo is lucky enough to have an incredible 22. Most are open:

Monday - Thursday: 10:00-18:00
Friday: 09:00-18:00
Saturday: 09:00-15:00
